Actual SE's differ from directories and paid inclusion search engines. There are basically four major search engine types which should be of interest. They are:

  • Crawler-based (traditional or common) search engines;
  • Directories (mostly human-edited catalogues);
  • Hybrid engines (META engines and those using other engines' results);

Crawler-based search engines have three major elements. First is the spider, also called the crawler. The spider visits a web page, reads it, and then follows links to other pages within the site. This is what it means when someone refers to a site being "spidered" or "crawled." The spider returns to the site on a regular basis, such as every month or two, to look for changes.

Everything the spider finds goes into the second part of the search engine, the index. The index, sometimes called the catalog, is like a giant book containing a copy of every web page that the spider finds. If a web page changes, then this book is updated with new information.

Sometimes it can take a while for new pages or changes that the spider finds to be added to the index. Thus, a web page may have been "spidered" but not yet "indexed." Until it is indexed -- added to the index -- it is not available to those searching with the search engine.

Search engine software is the third part of a search engine. This is the program that sifts through the millions of pages recorded in the index to find matches to a search and rank them in order of what it believes is most relevant. Google uses a huge set of computers to fetch (or "crawl") billions of pages on the web. Googlebot uses an algorithmic process; computer programs determine which sites to crawl, how often, and how many pages to fetch from each site. Google's crawl process begins with a list of web page URLs, generated from previous crawl processes, and augmented with Sitemap data provided by webmasters.

As Googlebot visits each of these websites, it detects links on each page and adds them to its list of pages to crawl. New sites, changes to existing sites, and dead links are noted and used to update the Google index. Google, like most other crawler-based SEs, doesn't accept payment to crawl a site more frequently.

 

How Search Engine Optimization Works

Search Engines use special algorithms to determine which pages are relevant to a particular keyword or search phrase. Due to the nature of the web, it is not entirely possible to guarantee a #1 ranking for a website on all search engines, but it is possible to get and maintain high rankings for particular keywords, relating to the content of the website (usually in the top 10 category).
